I'm telling you a story of when we were young, 27 years ago. And then I said to myself, 'No.' I'm hoping that the public gets it. Are you worried you will have to relive this pain again when 'Surviving Compton' premieres? It feels you have grown, but then you suddenly feel like you haven't moved at all. Then when it airs and the public sees it, they react and it drags you back. You are shooting three months before anybody sees it. I was appearing on the reality show R&B Divas and when I started to fall apart it was very public. They were everything to me and my world was shattered. When my mother and my grandmother died three months apart, I knew my world was over. You have spent many years suffering from depression and have attempted to take your own life. You started by saying you survived Compton, but you nearly did not survive. She was trying to tell me something without being judgmental, trying to help me understand that's what men do. I know in the movie it looks like my grandmother is condoning it, but she really wasn't. I accepted it and thought, "Well, this is how he loves." I got that from my mother and from my grandmother, who were abused. I assumed that would be the first and last time. And I could not have done it without them.ĭo you think he understood how wrong it was? But he could not have done it without me. What we made came from putting things together.

I couldn't have given him that musical talent or the ability that he has. Dre couldn't have given me those words to write, and he couldn't have given me that voice to sing. When started working on my stuff, we created something that was phenomenal. What do you see as your contribution to the music you made with Dre and Suge? Now Michel'le is telling her side of the story in a new Lifetime movie, Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge & Michel'le, premiering this Saturday, October 15.

After her relationship with Dre ended, she became romantically involved in an abusive relationship with Suge Knight, the head of Death Row Records. Michel'le has maintained she suffered brutal physical violence from Dre for years during their relationship. She was also Dre's girlfriend and eventually the mother of his child. None of this was in Straight Outta Compton, though, because Michel'le was more than just a fellow artist at Ruthless and Death Row. When Ruthless Records released Michel'le after Suge Knight allegedly intimidated Eazy-E into releasing her and other artists from the label, she took her distinctive sound and commercial power with her and produced hits for Death Row Records for years.

At a time when radio stations rarely played rap music in regular rotation, it was Michel'le's Nicety and Something in My Heart that helped make Ruthless a commercial success. R&B vocalist Michel'le gave the label one of its most distinctive sounds and is arguably responsible for its breakout success. Ruthless Records, the label of N.W.A., Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and others, was not an exclusively male empire. Dre and Ice Cube, and mourned again the loss of a young Eazy-E-all members of the early '90s group-it was all too easy to forget the part of the story that had been omitted from the film. As audiences embraced the revival of a young Dr. The urban soundtrack of black male resistance-to police brutality and economic and racial inequality-resonated across the two decades that had elapsed since the hip hop group first gained prominence. When Straight Outta Compton appeared in theaters in 2015, it brought the music and story of N.W.A.
